People try all sorts of different remedies and treatments in an attempt to stop snoring. Perhaps you have used some of the various medications, sprays or mouthpieces on the market to no avail. There are many things you can do that are more effective than those things and that actually work. Here are a few ideas to try.

Chronic allergies are a common cause of snoring in many people. When the nasal passages are swollen and full of mucous, it forces you to breathe through your mouth, causing you to snore. Check with your doctor for medications that can treat your allergies, and thus, may end your snoring.

If your child snores, make an appointment with your pediatrician. Nose and throat problems as well as obesity are often the cause of snoring in children. Obtaining treatment for these underlying conditions can help your child stop snoring and get a good night's sleep. In addition, serious or bothersome health problems can be corrected simultaneously.

Do your best to avoid sleeping on your back if you have been dealing with bad snoring. Some people have even sewn tennis balls onto their shirts to prevent them from doing it while asleep! This seems painful, but you do what works best for you. You can also try using special pillows and other special anti-snoring bed items to help prevent you from snoring.

If all other snoring remedies have failed you, it might be time to consider getting surgery to help alleviate your snoring. These days surgery on the nose and throat has been shown to cure snoring in over 70% of patients with most of them never snoring again. However, this should be a last resort.

Get a mouth guard. Visiting a doctor for a prescription mouth guard is a successful method for many who suffer from a rattling snore. The mouth guard prevents your jaw muscles from relaxing too much, preventing them from slipping back. This method may be costly, but if you are a persistent snorer, it is worth a try!

Avoid large meals before bed. When you go to bed with a full stomach, pressure is placed on your diaphragm, restricting your airways. Anything that reduces your ability to breathe at night is a likely cause of snoring. Try to eat your larger meals several hours before bed, giving your body a chance to digest before sleeping.

Sometimes snoring is brought on by people coming down with cold or sinus problems. If a person's nasal passages are clogged up, he or she must rely more heavily on breathing through the mouth. This causes your throat to have to try harder for air through your mouth, which causes snoring.

With all the advancements in the medical field and in technology, you would think that there would be a definitive cure for snoring by now. However, so many of the wares touted as cures today are really only akin to snake oil. However, by using the simple remedies outlined in this article, you will find that you can go a long way toward reducing your snoring and getting a more restful night's sleep.
