Boils Treatment Review By People Who Have Had Them

By Don Williams

A boil is an open, red, leaky sore on the skin's surface. It is concentrated at the base of a hair or hairs on the skin and is the product of an infection in the hair follicle. A follicle is the organ that produces each hair. Some of the most successful remedies employ materials found around the home and are based largely on common sense. What follows is a boils treatment review.

A hair follicle is made up of several parts. The matrix is a group of cells that make most of the other follicular structures. It contains some of the most rapidly dividing cells in the human body. This is why people undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy for cancer often lose their hair, because the treatment is aimed at populations of dividing cells. Another structure in the hair follicle is a papilla. This is made up of a small loop of capillary, or small blood vessel, as well as connective tissue.

The sheath of the hair root has two distinct layers, inner and outer. The inner sheath is made up of three separate layers. The innermost layer is made up of cuticle. Henle's layer, the middle layer, is composed of nucleated cells shaped like cubes. Nuclei appear flat. The outermost layer, Huxley's, is made up of one or more layers of nucleated flat, horny cells.

The hair fiber itself is composed of keratin. Keratin is a structural protein found in hair, nails and skin. The bulge is another major structure of the hair follicle. It houses a population of immature cells called stem cells that take part in healing the skin following a wound.

Other follicular structures include sweat glands, sebaceous glands that secrete oil and muscles called arector pili. The follicle also contains receptors that can detect the position of the hair.

Unless boils are extremely painful, they are best not tampered with as they will rupture of their own accord when it is safe. They contain harmful, infectious bacteria known as staphylococcus. People with diabetes, malnutrition or who are taking antibiotics or immunosuppresant drugs tend to be the most vulnerable to getting the sores.

If a boil bursts prematurely, it is essential to keep the area as clean as possible until it is fully healed. Any dressings that have been used to protect the sores should be disposed of in a sealed plastic bag. All bedding and clothing should be washed thoroughly in very hot water.

Most boils treatment reviews suggest simple home remedies like applying a hot compress or simple home solutions such as warm, salty water or apple cider vinegar. Any large, spongy boils should be reported to a medical professional such as a doctor or a nurse.
