The Omega Fountain of Youth

By David Morris

We've all heard or read about Omega 3 oils, or fatty acids, in the last few years, and we've been told that they're good for our health, especially for those with heart disease. Now the interesting thing is, researchers don't know exactly why Omega 3 oils are so good for us, or how they protect our heart. They just know that they do. However, a new sturdy recently published seems to gives some new insights on how and why Omega 3 works.

Reversing a cell's age

The researchers set out to discover the link connecting a health heart and omega 3 fats. To do this, they examined something called 'telomeres'. Telomeres are the coverings at each end of a strand of DNA, and the researchers were measuring how the length of telomeres changed.

According to researchers, telomere length is a good marker of how old a cell is, because as cells age, the telomeres become shorter. The shorter a cell's telomeres, the older the cell is. When the telomeres become too short to protect DNA from damage, the cell goes into a resting phase or dies and is then replaced by other cells

Omega-3 fats leads to younger cells?

This study took 608 people with a heart condition that was stable. The researchers simply measured the telomere length of the white blood cells for each of the study participants, once at the start of the study and then again and the end, which was five years later. The researchers also noted the levels omega-3 fats in the blood too.

The study's results showed that the participants who had the highest levels of omega-3 fats in the their blood at the inception of the study experienced the slowest rates of telomere shortening in the 5 year study period. The shortening telomere rates were much more rapid, in those participants that had the lower levels of omega-3 in their blood.

This study indicates that there maybe a roll that omega-3 oils have in protecting our cells from ageing. And perhaps this is one of the reasons why our omega-3 oils are so good for the heart in keeping it healthy, even in those who have some levels of heart disease. Like the results of all studies, more research is still needed in this field.

Are you getting enough omega-3?

Omega-3 fats could also lower the risks of other chronic conditions including cancer.

Good sources of omega-3 oils include spirulina, chia seeds, wheatgrass Powder, walnuts, olive oil, and linseeds. It's easy to make small changes to your diet to include these foods, so you can make sure you're getting enough Omega-3.
