Go To A Doctor If You Have Enlarged Heart Symptoms

By Theo Hardie

Enlarged heart symptoms affect people with a condition known as cardiomegaly. It is picked up on a chest x-ray before diagnostic tests are performed to establish the cause of the enlarged heart. The condition may be temporary due to the extra weight caused by pregnancy or as the result of a medical condition.

There are a number of conditions that cause cardiomegaly. Some of them include weakness of the cardiac muscle, abnormal cardiac arrhythmia, conditions of the cardiac valves and coronary thrombosis. An enlarged heart can be treated even though it is not always possible to avoid the condition.

If you suspect that you have cardiomegaly, you should see a physician right away. Some symptoms of an enlarged heart include chest pain, swelling, arrhythmia, coughing or dizziness. Even if you don't have these symptoms, you could still have the condition.

If the organ has to pump harder than normal, it will damage the muscles inside. It may be idiopathic, which means that it weakens for unknown reasons.

However, cardiomegaly may also be caused by high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, coronary thrombosis and other diseases of the organ. Four valves manage the blood flow, but they can be damaged by infections, medications, connective tissue disorders and rheumatic fever. Other linked disorders include arrhythmia, anemia, hemochromatosis (excessive iron) and some rare diseases.

There are several risks to a enlarged heart and they are dependent on the location of the enlargement and the underlying condition which is the cause. When the organ can't pump enough blood for the body's needs, heart failure occurs. Murmurs may also occur when the tricuspid and mitral valves don't closer properly due to dilation. This causes a backflow of blood and should be closely monitored by a doctor. If you have enlarged heart symptoms, you should visit your doctor right away as it may cause cardiac arrest and even sudden death.
